Several lawmakers today filed a bill seeking to rename the Commonwealth Avenue in Quezon City as Erano G. Manalo Avenue in recognition of the spiritual contribution of the late religious leader of the Iglesia Ni Cristo.

Introduced by Reps. Candido P. Pancrudo, Jr. (1st District, Bukidnon), Diosdado "Dato" M. Arroyo (1st District, Camarines Sur), Pedro P. Romualdo (Lone District, Camiguin), Yevgeny Vincente B. Emano (2nd District, Misamis Oriental), Jose S. Aquino II (1st District, Agusan del Norte), Antonio F. Lagdameo, Jr. (2nd District, Davao del Norte) and Rommel C. Amatong (2nd District, Compostela Valley), House Bill 6785 sought to convey Ka Erdy's idea of Filipino ingenuity by sculpturing a religion that originated in the Philippines, which has expanded around the world.

The lawmakers said the late Erano G. Manalo or "Ka Erdy," as he was fondly called, provided exemplary leadership to the Iglesia Ni Cristo (INC) by turning it to a concrete religious organization with influences around the world.

Ka Erdy also piloted the spiritual and moral well being of the Filipino people, the solons said.

According to the legislators, Ka Erdy also developed the Filipino culture with his colossal followers, through the massive doctrinal-discipline formation of norms and behavior that was transparently associated with the religion he professed.

"With Erano G. Manalo's religious leadership that transcended over political and social boundaries, Ka Erdy is worthy to be lined up with great Filipino leaders and other great Filipino achievers," the solons said.

Under the measure, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) shall issue the rules, orders and circulars necessary to carry out the provisions of the act.

A NASA spacecraft sped past a small comet Thursday, beaming pictures back to Earth that gave scientists a rare close-up view of its center. Mission controllers burst into applause upon seeing images from the flyby that revealed a peanut-shaped comet belching jets of poisonous gases.
The close encounter occurred 13 million miles from Earth when the Deep Impact craft, hurtling through space, flew within 435 miles of comet Hartley 2. It's only the fifth time that a comet's core has been viewed up close.
Scientists are interested in comets because they're icy leftovers from the formation of the solar system about 4.5 billion years ago. Studying them could provide clues to how Earth and the planets formed and evolved.

Thursday's flyby is actually an encore mission for Deep Impact. It set off cosmic fireworks on July 4, 2005, when it fired a copper probe that crashed into comet Tempel 1. The high-speed collision spewed a cloud of debris into space, giving scientists their first peek of the interior.

After the $333 million comet-buster, NASA recycled Deep Impact for a new mission to visit another comet. It was supposed to target comet Boethin in 2008, but it was nowhere to be found. Scientists theorized the comet may have broken up into small pieces.

Deep Impact was then redirected to Hartley 2. Roughly 1 1/2 miles long, Hartley 2 is the smallest comet to be photographed up close. On its way there, the craft spent several months scanning a cluster of nearby stars with known planets circling them.

While its latest task lacks the Hollywood drama of the Tempel 1 crash, researchers still consider it an important mission. Unlike in 2005, viewers could not see Thursday's comet encounter in real time since the craft's antenna was not pointed at Earth as it flew past Hartley 2.

Since September, Deep Impact has been stalking Hartley 2 like a paparazzo, taking images every 5 minutes and gathering data. It's the first craft to visit two comets.

Deep Impact will observe Hartley 2 until Thanksgiving and then wait for further instructions from NASA. The space agency has not decided whether to reuse Deep Impact again. The craft does not have enough fuel on board to do another flyby.

The latest images add to scientists' cometary photo album, said astronomer David Jewitt of the University of California, Los Angeles, who had no role in the project.

Hartley 2 passed within 11 million miles of Earth on Oct. 20 — the closest it has been to our planet since its discovery in 1986.

British-born astronomer Malcolm Hartley, who discovered the comet, said he never imagined a spacecraft would get so close to his namesake find.

1.Our Milky Way Galaxy
Summertime is undoubtedly the best time to observe the beautiful Milky Way. With a good pair of binoculars or a telescope you can now observe millions of sparkling little stars that make up this glowing, irregular belt of luminosity.

2.Albireo: Blue and Gold
Without question, this is one of if not the most beautiful double-stars in the night sky. Located in the constellation of Cygnus, the Swan, Albireo supposedly marks the swan's beak.

A small telescope or even a pair of steadily held binoculars will readily split Albireo into two tiny points of light of beautiful contrasting colors: the brighter one a rich yellowish-orange, the other a deep azure blue, both placed very close together.

3. The Coat Hanger

Most amateur astronomers have heard of such beautiful open star clusters as the Pleiades, Hyades and the Beehive. Yet few have ever heard of the "Coat Hanger."

But if you turn your binoculars to the region of the sky roughly halfway between the bright stars Vega and Altair, you will discover this intriguing group of stars. It is not too far away from the Cowboy Boot of Vulpecula that was number 9 on our list.

4. A Cosmic Chrysanthemum

Several clouds of stars surrounded by a few dark regions for contrast can be seen with binoculars in the bright area of the Milky Way about halfway between the star Altair and the constellation of Sagittarius.

Four faint stars in a stretched-out diamond are about all that is visible of Scutum, the Shield. One of the Milky Way's great star clouds is also within Scutum.

6. The "Double-Double" Star

Back to the constellation of Lyra once again, this time for a look at another double-star. In fact, you could almost call this one "Nu Draconis squared."

Epsilon Lyrae is better known as the "double-double" star. Exceptionally good vision on a clear, dark night will reveal Epsilon as undoubtedly two tiny stars (designated Epsilon 1 and Epsilon 2) that are very close together.

7. Draco the Dragon

While most folks are familiar with the Big and Little Dipper, in the same region of the sky is a long, winding group of stars which portrays the mythological creature of a dragon named Draco, which during late evening hours is riding high above Polaris, the North Star.

8. A Ghostly Doughnut

The little constellation of Lyra is supposed to represent Apollo's harp. Six fainter stars form a little geometric pattern of a parallelogram attached at its northern corner to an equal-sided triangle. Vega gleams at the western part of the triangle. But tucked in this region is the acclaimed Ring nebula.

9. The Dumbbell

Sighted in wide-field binoculars or a telescope's viewfinder, Rice's cowboy boot pattern helps us locate the beautiful Dumbbell nebula (M27). Picked up with very low power as a glowing bubble encompassing two hazy patches of light; it assumes a dumbbell appearance in larger telescopes.

10.The Cowboy Boot

It's a fact: Thumb through most astronomy books or skywatching guides and you'll find all the accolades going to the most brilliant and splashy star patterns such as Orion, the Hunter, Scorpius, the Scorpion or (for southern observers), the region around Crux, the Southern Cross.

But while the small, faint star patterns usually get short shrift, there's one pattern I always look for, partly because it serves as an excellent gage for determining the quality of the night sky and also because it serves as a "pointer" to one of the summer's best deep-sky objects.

WESTMINSTER, Md. – Steve Boucher rises early in the morning to take the drive. he has done it more than 30 times since the accident and e does not know why he does this. He is across the causeway toward Miami’s South Beach, past the silhouettes of cruise ships and darkened husks of harbor cranes until, at last, he reaches the point where Donte’ Stallworth’s(notes) car hit a crane operator named Mario Reyes as Reyes dashed across the highway right before dawn more than a year ago. Reyes died and his friend’s life would never be the same Boucher stares into the gauzy light and tries to understand what it felt like that morning. Yet understanding doesn’t bring comfort. Afternoon he sighed into the phone. Everything that happened on and resulted from the morning of March 14, 2009, is so incongruous with the man he knows: Stallworth, legally drunk with a blood alcohol content level of .12, subsequently was arrested, convicted, sentenced and suspended from football.

Stallworth did after it was clear he had accidentally killed a man with his car. He ordered his lawyers to accept a plea deal that convicted him of a felony even when evidence showed he had an excellent chance of being found innocent. He said Reyes’ death was enough of his fault that there shouldn’t be a trial and Reyes’ family shouldn’t have to sit in a courthouse and relive his death all over again.

Perhaps, in this world of athletes who can’t be trusted, it is hard to believe Donte’ Stallworth is getting a second chance at football. An athlete convicted of second-degree felony manslaughter is rarely worthy of our respect. Michael Vick(notes) and Plaxico Burress(notes) spent far longer time in jail than Stallworth’s 24 days – and they never killed another person. But in the aftermath of one bad decision came many good ones. And it is on those which we should judge too.

He did not want to talk about the accident, having discussed it so many times before. This is a time for football, for a new team, for a rebirth. For a moment, he seemed to gaze at the Maryland hills which roll into the distance.

“Any little decision you make will have a subsequent reaction,” he said softly. “Be cognizant of your decisions.”

He said he says this to everyone he meets now: teammates, friends, children.

“To anybody who will listen,” he said.

Then he added: “With guys being on the stage and the amount of money we get, you tend to trust that certain things will happen to you in life. It’s only human nature to think that way.”

But he is quick to say he never thought of himself as entitled. He never saw himself falling out of control. He simply made a bad decision – one he wishes he could take back, one he knows he can never fully repair.

On that morning he woke up thirsty, a source close to Stallworth said. He looked around his apartment for water. Finding none and seeing it was almost morning, he decided to go for breakfast. Minutes later, his car collided with Reyes.

“Everything has been challenged,” Stallworth said. “My faith has been tested. My character has been tested. I try to think positive for everybody.”

He’s always been a little different than most other football players. When teams needed someone to go to schools and clinics and youth camps, he was the one they called. He always said “yes.”

When he was with the Saints, his first NFL team, and Katrina roared through New Orleans, he was one of the most active players in the rebuilding. Even after the Saints traded him to Philadelphia before their first season back in the Superdome, he kept returning, offering support.

In his year away from football, he read. He loves politics. Cornwell remembers walking into Stallworth’s apartment and spying a biography of John Foster Dulles lying on the coffee table.

“Are you reading this?” Cornwell asked. Stallworth nodded.

But Stallworth’s particular fascination during his time away became 9-11. Almost a decade after the attacks, he is obsessed with the way the world turned and policy changed that day.

“I don’t know how to say this nicely, but everything’s a conspiracy to him,” Boucher said with a laugh.

Stallworth shook his head at the thought. But he admitted he has read most of the Sept. 11 theories out there. He has opinions. He has seen freedoms lost in the name of security and it bothers him. He talks about it with friends. He brings it up to teammates. And often they smile and shake their heads.

“A lot of people don’t always like my opinions on these things,” he said.

Then he smiled.

“I’m not going to believe everything I am told,” he said. “I’m going to find it out for myself.”

Still, a curious mind in a game where players are rewarded for not asking “Why?” is hardly a defense for what happened that morning in Miami – just as the fact Stallworth tucked a few old copies of The Economist in his bag for reading during lulls in camp isn’t enough to win over a public skeptical of athletes who find themselves in trouble.

Conversely, the way he handled the accident and Reyes’ death should say something about character, and perhaps say he is someone worthy of a second chance. That is why Ravens general manager Ozzie Newsome was quick to pursue Stallworth after Goodell lifted his one-year ban in February. Baltimore needed a receiver, and Newsome had asked around about Stallworth. Ravens receivers coach Jim Hostler had coached Stallworth in New Orleans and head coach John Harbaugh was a defensive backs coach with the Eagles when Stallworth was with Philadelphia. They enthusiastically supported the pursuit.

Newsome had dealt with similar situations in the past, when Ray Lewis(notes) was charged with manslaughter and running back Jamal Lewis(notes) was arrested for helping set up a drug deal. He knew the team could handle any aftermath of Stallworth’s accident. Then he began interviewing receivers coming out of college. Several said they had worked out in the previous months with Stallworth in Miami, and raved about the advice and help he gave them. Newsome was sold.

“Is he humbled by it?” Newsome asks in reference to the accident. “Yes. Nobody understands what he is going through internally.”

Newsome went to the other Ravens executives and said: “Just spend a half hour with this guy; you will see.”

Stallworth, released a week earlier by the Browns, was signed on Feb. 17. Stallworth, the team’s No. 3 receiver behind Derrick Mason(notes) and Boldin, has sparkled in camp. The other day, he reached behind cornerback Fabian Washington(notes) to tip a pass into the air and then catch it, all while running full speed – a play that left the coaching staff stunned.

Yet football offers only a temporary escape. There are reminders everywhere, even in simple things such as asking teammates for rides since he is not allowed to drive – a fact he does not disclose as a complaint but simply a reality of what happened that morning in 2009.

“What he’s going to get out of this, he is going to be able to teach a lot of people,” Boucher said. “They are going to be able to say: ‘I’m going to make a better decision than Donte’ did that day.’ ”
